What is CBD?
Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940. It is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain.
Does CBD Get You High?
NO; unlike THC, CBD does not produce the psychoactive effect that is commonly associated with marijuana, they are distinctly different substances. THC is the molecule that binds to the receptors in the brain and is the one responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana. CBD is antagonistic to the marijuana high; it actually prevents THC molecules from binding to the brain’s receptors. CBD has not demonstrated toxicity in the body (meaning it cannot make you “intoxicated” or “high”), however it is highly reactive with the body’s endocannabinoid system.
Is CBD Legal?
We are located out of Tennessee, but laws differ between states. Cannabis is legal for either medicinal or recreational use in some American states. Other states have approved the use of CBD oil as a hemp product but not the general use of medical marijuana. Some state and federal laws differ, and current marijuana and CBD legislation in the U.S. can be confusing, even in states where marijuana is legal. CBD products from hemp are legal in all 50 states. Note the keyword “hemp-derived” since hemp typically contains THC content of less than 0.3% and it is not possible to get “high” on CBD from hemp so it is strictly considered a supplement.
Certain states have different rules about exactly who, and under what conditions, can access CBD products. Many state have laws progressing through their state legislatures right now to regulate the industry. It is recommended that you check your state laws on the current status of CBD and its use.
What Are Some Benefits?
Although testing is continuing, CBD offers a possible natural alternative to pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties, quitting smoking, drug withdrawals, epilepsy, other neurological symptoms and disorders, fighting cancer, anxiety disorders, type 1 diabetes, acne, and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
How Does CBD Work?
All cannabinoids, including CBD, produce effects in the body by attaching to certain receptors. The human body produces certain cannabinoids on its own. It also has two receptors for cannabinoids, called the CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are present throughout the body, but many are in the brain. The CB1 receptors in the brain deal with coordination and movement, pain, emotions, and mood, thinking, appetite, and memories, and other functions. THC attaches to these receptors. CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.
